Urgent appointments for today
When you get in touch, we’ll ask what you need help with.
We will use the information you give us to choose the most suitable doctor, nurse or health professional to help you.
Telephone calls are recorded for training and monitoring purposes.
How to book
- Request an urgent appointment online - This services is available from 7:30am to 10am.
- Telephone: 01227 469333 - on the morning of the day you wish to be seen and we will do our best to offer you an appointment for that day.

Book a Routine Appointment
When you call for an appointment you will be asked to give very brief details of why you need an appointment and for a contact phone number.
All information given by you to any of the Medical Centre staff will be dealt with in total confidence. Your call will then be logged and a Doctor or Nurse Practitioner will call you back to assess your problem and make an appointment for you if appropriate.

Sickness Certificates (Fit Notes)
You must give your employer a doctor's 'fit note' (sometimes called a 'sick note') if you've been ill for more than 7 days in a row and have taken sick leave. This includes non-working days, such as weekends and bank holidays.

Home Visits
Please be aware that our GPs will always call to assess the home visit request first.
If you need a home visit, you can help us by calling reception before 11am.

Whilst we encourage our patients to come to the surgery, where we have the proper equipment and facilities available, we do appreciate this is not always possible.
You may only request a home visit if you are housebound or are too ill to visit the practice. Your GP will only visit you at home if they think that your medical condition requires it and will also decide how urgently a visit is needed. Please bear this in mind and be prepared to provide suitable details to enable the doctor to schedule house calls.
Change or Cancel an Appointment
Please give us as much notice as possible so we can offer your appointment to someone else.

4. Text the word CANCEL to your text reminder and your appointment will be automatically cancelled by our system.
Text Reminders
The University Medical Centre is able to offer a Text Appointment Reminder service. Through this we are able to send you a reminder of your forthcoming appointment by texting it straight to your mobile telephone.
The reminder will advise you of the time and date of your appointment and the clinician you will be seeing. so that you can schedule the rest of your busy day around it.
This is a free service and no charge will be incurred by you for this service.
In order to provide this service to you, we will need to have your correct mobile phone number on our records – if you have changed it go to our Change of Details page and you can make the most of this service.
Out of Hours
Enhanced Access
Pre-booked clinics operate on most (but not all) Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.
The Medical Centre is closed on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays.
Please ask at reception for more enhanced access information.
University Nursing Service (UNS)
University Nursing Service is situated next to campus security, University of Kent
The service is available to all students and staff at the University of Kent (Canterbury Campus) and is staffed 24 hours a day during term time by registered nurses.
University Nursing Service offers a confidential drop-in service, which provides support and advice, treatment of minor illnesses and minor injuries, contraceptive advice and can arrange emergency contraception via the University Medical Centre.
- University Nursing Service offers a walk-in service Monday to Friday, 7am to 10am and 5pm to midnight.
- We run an appointment only service during University Medical Centre opening times (10am to 5pm, Monday to Friday)
- University Nursing Service offers a walk-in service at the weekend from 7am to midnight.
- Midnight until 7am is for emergencies only, UNS is then accesssed via campus security on 01227 823300 who will contact a nurse on your behalf.
Walk-in waiting times can vary. We strive to see all patients as quickly as possible, but during busy periods and when we have in-patients your wait may be longer. During these times the nurse will endeavour to keep you informed of the waiting time.
University Nursing Service has two patient bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms where students may stay if the nurse or doctor feels it is appropriate. If you are going to stay in UNS please bring clothing and toiletries and any essentials that might make your stay more comfortable.
Life Threatening
Call 999 or go to A&E now if:
- you or someone you know needs immediate help
- you have seriously harmed yourself - for example, by taking a drug overdose
A mental health emergency should be taken as seriously as a medical emergency.
Urgent But Not Life Threatening
Visit an urgent care centre if:
- You have an urgent medical issue requiring on the day attention
Non-urgent
Use NHS 111 if:
- You need help now, but it's not an emergency
There will be someone to provide you with advice and to direct you to a clinician if it is necessary.
