Temporary Services

If you are ill while away from home or if you are not registered with a Doctor but need to see one, you can receive emergency treatment from the local GP Practice for 14 days. After 14 days you will need to register as a temporary or permanent patient.

You can be registered as a temporary patient for up to three months. This will allow you to be on the local Practice list and still remain a patient of your permanent GP. After three months you will have to re-register as a temporary patient or permanently register with that Practice.

To register as a temporary patient simply contact the practice you wish to use. Practices do not have to accept you as a temporary patient although they do have an obligation to offer emergency treatment. You cannot register as a temporary patient at a Practice in the town or area where you are already registered.

Your Named GP

In accordance with NHS England we are contractually obliged to allocate a named GP to all our patients including children.

The named GP is largely a role of oversight, with the requirements being introduced to reassure patients they have one GP within the practice who is responsible for ensuring that this work is carried out on their behalf.

It does not mean that patients have to see their named GP when booking an appointment, patients can continue to choose to see any GP or nurse of their choice as they can now.

We have now allocated a GP to all our patients registered at the practice. Please contact the practice if you would like to know the name of your allocated doctor.

We know that some patients will wish their named GP to be a particular doctor. Where a patient expresses a preference as to which doctor they have been assigned, the practice will make reasonable efforts to accommodate this request, but we would like to reassure patients that this system does not prevent you from seeing any GP in the practice as you currently do. Your named GP will not be available at all times.

Registrations Frequently Asked Questions

Student at the University of Kent or Christchurch University, Canterbury?

You are invited to register with the University Medical Centre. Your term-time address must be within our 6-mile radius, if you are a student and live outside this radius you need to register with a doctor nearer your term-time address.

NHS registration is open to UK and overseas students for courses over 3 calendar months in length When you register your notes from your previous doctor (if currently registered in England) will be forwarded to us and we will take over responsibility for your health care needs.

If your course is for 3 months or less you will be able to access the NHS services as a temporary resident. Please contact the University Medical Centre or any other GP practice near where you are living in the UK.

Student at the Medway Campus?

If you are a studying at the Medway campus and live in the Chatham area then you must register at your local GP Practice and not at the University Medical Centre.

If you are studying at the Medway campus but live in Canterbury you can register with us.

Visitors from a country without a reciprocal agreement may register as a Private Patient at the discretion of the Practice, but will be charged for consultations, prescriptions and treatment.

Are you just visiting for a short stay?

If you are ill while away from home or if you are not registered with a doctor but need to see one you can receive emergency treatment from a local GP Practice.

You can be registered as a temporary patient for up to 3 months. This will allow you to be on the local practice list and still remain a patient of your permanent GP. After 3 months you will have to re-register as a temporary patient or permanently register with that Practice.

To register as a temporary patient simply contact the local practice you wish to use. Practices do not have to accept you as a temporary patient although they do have an obligation to offer emergency treatment. You cannot register as a temporary patient at a Practice in the town or area where you are already registered.

Why should I register with the University Medical Centre?

In order to receive treatment locally under the NHS you must register with a doctor in this area, as you will be resident here for the greater part of the year. Students who live on the Canterbury campus or within six miles of the Campus should register with the University Medical Centre in order to use the on campus facilities. We offer a range of services especially tailored to suit our student population and can liaise with the University when necessary.

What do I do if I register with the University Medical Centre and then need to see a doctor when I am at home for the holidays?

If you live in the UK you can see a doctor near your vacation address (probably your old GP) as a Temporary Resident.

This means that you will have to fill in a form when you go for the appointment which is sent back to the University Medical Centre (where your complete NHS Records will be kept) so that your medical records are kept up to date.

What do I do if I need a repeat prescription for regular medication during the vacation and my local doctor won’t prescribe it?

What shall I do if I submit my on-line registration and then realise that some the information I entered was incorrect?

If you realise that you have entered some incorrect information on the online form after you have submitted it - e.g. the dates of your vaccinations/ accommodation address.

Will I have to pay for my treatment at the University Medical Centre?

You may, however, need to pay a prescription charge when you take your prescription to the Pharmacy to be dispensed.
